T/F A 9-1-1 Certification will ensure a student will gain a position at a Comm Center

False of course.  A certification will inform the Comm Center hiring board that the owner has completed a course in 9-1-1, including hands-on learning with a simulator for police, fire, and EMS personnel.  There are still a number of additional steps to be considered for this fantastic opportunity, including a battery of tests, background checks, drug testing, a psychological exam, and interviews, among others.

T/F There is only one 9-1-1 Certification that is ‘recognized’

False of course. When someone asks if NECC is ‘recognized’ they may mean “is this required for hiring” or “is this required for employment” or “is this a certification a newly hired person will be required to get?”  NECC is recognized as the final online 132 question exam that follows the 9-1-1 Academy.  NECC is recognized as theONLY certification for PRE HIRE validated by Professional Testing Corporation.  PTC is the exam validation company used by NENA for the ENP.

T/F Certification is good for colleges and high schools

Yes, well, actually NECC was created and ‘recognized’ for pre-hire 9-1-1 education for High Schools, Colleges, VoTech, and Academies.

T/F Your program has choices on which certification to purchase

Yes, they do.   Our certification is for the teacher and the student and is offered by the school.  APCO and IAED certifications differ in that they require sending the teacher to a class and yearly updates.  APCO and Priority Dispatch certifcations were created for Comm Center working personnel, not colleges and high schools.

T/F NECC is not recognized in the 9-1-1 industry

True in that 9-1-1 has traditionally been disconnected from career education.  There are law enforcement, policing, fire, EMS, and paramedic classes in every state in the US.  However, 9-1-1 as a career course is way behind, hidden but emerging.  We spend time educating 9-1-1 about the importance of career education.  We have a long way to go.  And 9-1-1 is screaming busy.  They don’t have time to setup their own college or high school courses.  That is what we do.  And by the way, we are from this industry.

T/F 9-1-1 Certifications basically are all the same

False of course. Again, a certification follows a ‘curriculum’ so they cannot all be the same – because the courses are not exactly the same.  We all teach 9-1-1 but only our academy was created in a DACUM process and validated by PTC.

I found the test to be a very good overall assessment of what an emergency telecommunicator generally needs to understand in order to be successful. Public Safety Joint Communications. I absolutely think this is a great tool for testing someone being released from training”
